HC Porto: Building a Legacy on and Off the Ice
In 2023, a dream was born in the heart of Porto, Portugal. HC Porto, the nation’s first professional ice hockey club, was established with a bold vision: to become the foundation of ice hockey in Portugal and to inspire a new generation of players in a country where the sport was still finding its footing. From the very beginning, HC Porto was more than just a team—it was a movement to create a lasting legacy for ice hockey in Portugal.
A Short History
The inception of HC Porto, Portugal’s pioneering ice hockey club, traces back to the ambitious vision of developing the sport in a nation with no winter sports tradition. The idea emerged alongside the construction of Portugal’s first modern ice rink, a project that sparked hopes of cultivating a hockey culture. However, the urgency to establish a competitive team grew after the Portuguese national team’s struggles at the IIHF Development Cup in April 2023, where their performance highlighted the need for a structured domestic program.

HC Porto was founded with a mission to create a sustainable ice hockey ecosystem in Portugal. Our goal is to build a hockey pyramid, starting with our professional team and expanding to youth academies, regional teams, and community programs. We want to put Portugal on the map of European ice hockey and provide opportunities for young athletes to succeed on the international stage.

Set to debut in Autumn 2025, Ice Hockey Club Porto’s state-of-the-art home arena in Trofa marks a transformative milestone for Portuguese ice sports. Nestled in the heart of Trofa, this modern facility will feature a full Olympic-sized ice sheet (60m x 30m), meeting international standards to host high-level competitions, training, and community programs. With 600 seats, the arena balances intimacy and energy, offering fans an electrifying atmosphere to cheer on Porto’s teams while providing versatile space for regional and international tournaments

HC Porto Youth Academy
At the heart of HC Porto’s mission is its youth academy, a program designed to develop the next generation of Portuguese ice hockey stars. From the moment the club was established, the academy became a hub for young talent, offering world-class coaching and a clear pathway to success.
The ultimate goal is to see these young athletes continue their careers in top European leagues or even in North America. HC Porto dreams of the day when a Portuguese player, nurtured in Porto’s youth academy, will skate onto the ice in the NHL or represent Portugal on the world stage.
